Bike Belles Wear Moving is a project encouraging more women to cycle in Sunderland, Washington and Wearside. The project is funded by Sunderland Public Health and delivered by Sustrans.

We run lots of free cycling activities including women-only bike rides and one-to-one cycle training. We have bikes and helmets available to hire for free as well.

Women-only bike rides in Sunderland and Washington:

We usually run a ride every weekend, alternating between Sundays from Washington and Saturday from the Bike Dock in Sunderland. We have rides at three different levels: beginner, improver and challenge – no matter what your ability we’ve got something for eveyone!

All of our rides are fully supported by our friendly, knowledgeable ride leaders who will help you with any mechanical issues and offer useful cycling advice and encouragement along the way.

Upcoming rides:

Sunday 16th July 9am – Washington Mind to Fausto Coffee on Roker seafront ~ 22 mile circular route.

Our bimonthly FREE Women’s only Bike Belles Challenge rides from Washington Mind are a fantastic way to improve your fitness, prepare for a cycling holiday or simply explore the north east with new friends.


This ride will cross the Wear at Cox Green bridge, and after tackling Cox Green hill will continue to Roker sea front for a coffee break at the lovely Fausto Coffee cycling cafe. After re-fueling by the sea we’ll be cycling back along the North side of the river. The route will be a roughly 22 mile loop, starting and finishing in Washington.

Adult cycle training – one-to-one Learn to Ride and cycle confidence sessions

Never learnt to ride a bike? Or want to get back on your bike after a break? Either way we can help! One-to-one sessions can be arranged throughout the week or at weekends and will help you feel confident on two wheels.

These sessions are very informal and relaxed, progressing at a pace suitable for you. Whether you need a series of sessions or just a one off booster to help with gears, we can help.
